Cryotherapy: Celebrity Beauty Secret

What do Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Alba and Demi Moore have in common (besides being three of the hottest women in Hollywood)? They are all fans of Cryotherapy, a type of wellness treatment that involves subjecting yourself to freezing cold temperatures in order to reap a whole host of health and beauty benefits. Knowing these celebs were on board, we were instantly eager to know more. Here, Cryohealthcare’s managing director Emilia Kuehne gives us the scoop.

“Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) is healing with extremely cold temperatures,” says Kuehne. “Cryo means ‘cold’ in Greek.” So how does it work? You expose your body to ultra-low temperatures (between 200 and 240 degrees below zero) inside a cryosauna for two to three minutes—your hands and feet are protected with gloves, socks and slippers, and you also wear ear and mouth protection.

“This modality was first utilized in Japan in 1978 to treat rheumatoid arthritis,” says Kuehne. “More recently, studies conducted in Europe over the last two decades have established WBC as a powerful treatment for inflammatory disorders and injuries. Every client experiences a different result, whether that’s pain relief, recovery, changes in mood, better sleep, improvement in various skin conditions, or weight loss (you burn between 500–800 calories during one treatment), among others.”

But what about beauty benefits? Kuehne says WBC is a huge beauty regimen for those in the know, like many celebrities and beauty seekers who choose to “freeze” frequently. “The short exposure to extremely low temperatures promotes collagen production from head to toe, as well as skin tightening.” Thanks Dr. Kuehne!!
