Cryotherapy is the process of exposing oneself to extremely cold temperatures for a few minutes at a time. The therapy session uses frigid temperatures, up to and even lower than -200 degrees Fahrenheit. Sessions usually last around 2-3 minutes. But what are the results, and how long do they last?
Results of Cryotherapy
You can probably already imagine the results of exposing yourself to frigid air for a few minutes. Endorphins get released, as is typical of cold exposure, which can trigger euphoria. Adrenaline and other hormones burst out and boost your energy levels and help you burn calories. Think of how your body would react to a fight or flight scenario. This is doing that in a controlled way. Whole-body cryotherapy can help treat arthritis, anxiety, depression, multiple sclerosis, and other conditions. Athletes have used it for inflammation and soreness and others even use it for weight loss.
Maybe a better question is how quickly you will feel results. In only moments of being in frigid temperatures, your body will react as if you were stuck out in a snowstorm. The extreme drop in temperature causes your body to trigger thermogenesis. This is basically a scientific name for burning calories to produce heat. Thermogenesis can boost your metabolism and help you burn up to 500 extra calories a day for up to two whole weeks after therapy! That’s half a whole month.
Burning calories for weeks isn’t the only long-lasting result, the endorphins last quite a while, too. When the endorphins release, they block pain signals in the brain. This is why you may feel pain reduction and inflammation immediately after cryotherapy treatment. However, the fight or flight aspect of these endorphins typically lasts between six to eight hours after treatment. But evidence shows that if you do treatment more often, the endorphins will last longer.
